Phonebox Magazine OCTOBER 2006
Welcome to the October Edition
It has been a glorious summer, and the weather is still holding out. I write this early in the morning and the sun is shining and it feels more mediterranean than British.
But the good weather does not always bring out the good in people, Olney Football Club have had problems with vandals and the Town Council have had problems with the floral display on the outskirts of town, see letter and articles on pages 5 and 37 (too name but two). Unfortunately it seems youngsters are to blame. From our Mercury report we see that residents are concerned enough to attend the September Council meeting. The old days of a cuff round the ear have gone (ask Cherie Blair about that one), so answers are needed: CCTV or perhaps another bobby on the beat? Is this a summer boredom thing that going back to school will cure? At least for us, but possibly not the teachers!
Looking through the mag you’ll see that not all have allowed themselves to be bored, congratulations must go to those who are using or have used their time more wisely: on page 10 Oakley Air Cadets are looking for new members with a sense of adventure, their list of activities is awesome. Three lads on page 11 did an amazing journey with an old car raising money for charity – and enjoying themselves at the same time (it is allowed).
We have an amazing amount of facilities in the area: tennis, cricket, football, rugby, hockey... sailing. Not to mention a vibrant music scene. There is plenty to do for those that put a little effort into it. There is more to do than just practising making rabbit signs behind the PM’s wife’s back!
