Olney Ladies Rugby
In their first game of the season Olney Ladies faced an experienced side from the league above in Old Albanians.
OAs started on the offensive with an excellent spell of incursions from their big back row. Olney focused on absorbing the pressure and managed to keep the onslaught out for a good 10 minutes. At times the home side were pushed back to defend on the line but kept OAs at bay and eventually turned over the ball to go back up pitch.
Good driving runs from new players Lizzy Leetch and Maddy Bowley took the pink ladies forward and some excellent runs from winger Lizzy Holbourne drove the visitors further back.
Olney were now making strides and soon challenging for the line, staying in OA’s 22 for a long period of time. Pressure just wasn’t turning into points however, and lacking support play meant OAs were able to take the ball back and drive up pitch. A missed tackle from Olney let OA’s number 8 through at the half way point and she sprinted through to touch down.
Olney were keen to redress the balance from the restart, with Helen Hacker making the full force of her tackling felt. OA’s were very good at securing ball at breakdowns which meant Olney struggled to turn over the ball.
Once again the hosts were on the defensive and absorbing OAs piercing runs, and excellent tackles from Kirsty Duncan and number 10 Kellyann Davey kept out OAs for some time. Eventually however Olney started to tire in the heat and OAs were able to crash through from the back of a ruck.
The second half brought renewed purpose from Olney as they dominated the first 10 minutes, and strode up pitch with a series of excellent pop passing and support play. The pink ladies were tantalisingly close to scoring and once again camped out in OAs 22. Despite deserving a score, pressure just wouldn’t turn into points but great running from Kellyann Davey and Lizzy Leetch bodes well for the season ahead.
OAs managed to regain control and fight back up pitch with some deeply placed kicks, cleared up by flanker Sarah Larner. Regaining possession from a kick by OAs, Olney went on the offensive again and a brilliant individual display of speed from full back Kerry James saw her dash from the half way to almost score, being bundled into touch on the try line.
OAs once again worked up pitch to score twice in quick succession, using their numerous subs and fresh legs to keep the pace of the game up. Olney kept the battle up with crunching tackles from prop Amanda Clarke and new second row Terri Denham, and battled to keep the defence solid. OAs pace was too much and they once again scored round the outside to round off the game.
