HAVE YOUR SAY
Letters
Dear Editor
I have just seen the September copy of Phonebox. The article about Angus' trip looks great, thank you so much for including it.
There have already been some donations to the myeloma fund as a result of the article and it will have helped raise awareness of this little- known cancer.
Best wishes Joanna Johnstone
Dear Editor
I live in Emberton and like many other local ‘shoppers’ to the Town I’m finding it almost an impossibility to park my car.
I can remember the days when you could easily park on the Market Square or in the Co-op car park. I am now finding I have to park some distance away.
It’s a pity the local council didn’t have the hindsight to realise some years ago the predicament. With every available inch of ‘spare’ land now built on, it’s got to the point where a park and ride for shoppers and workers might be the answer.
Anyone else agree with me?
Emberton resident
Dear Sir
In response to Jane Carr's letter in your September edition, I am impressed that she is still around.
The exclusive nature of the MK Council whilst in LibDem control made everything a competition or a fight.
The local Conservatives, and yes I am pleased to be labelled a local Conservative, have been working for a better Milton Keynes for all the residents. You only have to look at the recent rejection of sitting LibDem Councillors in Olney; Walton Park; Bletchely & Fenny Straton; Linford South; Linford North; and Stony Stratford to see the fruits of the LIbDem exclusive approach to our great City.
In Olney Debbie Brock has been working, not pontificating, for the local residents, and I am sure your readers will recognise the difference of approach. Our MP, Mark Lancaster, out there (literally) fighting for us – a fine example of what we can look forward to from the local Conservatives.
We recognise that we have many changes coming upon us: expansion not being the least! I shout with joy that we no longer have a secretive inner circle deciding what is best for Milton Keynes – now it has to be discussed openly in MK Council, people have to be convinced – Long Live Democracy!
Tony Kenyon, A local Conservative Dear Olney Residents
In what should have been an historic week for Olney Town Football Club it is with deep regret that we have to write this letter. As many of you know the Football Club has worked tirelessly with the local residents to secure planning permission for FA Standard floodlights and only this week we have received a grant in excess of £30,000 that will enable work to commence immediately. This development not only secures the future of our club to play at the highest level but also secures the required training facilities for over 180 colts players (aged 4-16) and a developing ladies team. Such level of grant funding is unprecedented and demonstrates the status of Olney Town Football Club.
So why have I been moved to write this letter?
You can imagine my dismay, anger and embarrassment at the actions of a large (120+) group of youths on Friday 8th September. Not only did they knock down part of our stand but also damaged perimeter fencing and broke into the equipment store. I attended the scene during the evening and witnessed activity I have never seen the like of before, and for the record was the subject of abuse etc. Youths from an age of 12 ran amock on the Recreation Ground, drinking, screaming and so on.
We have to clean our stand every Saturday to accommodate our visitors and put up with broken bottles, litter etc. left from the previous night’s youth activity but it hit new depths on the night in question. We are a pretty hardy lot at the Football Club but having to deal with such debris as well as urination/human faeces etc. has become no joke.
Why embarrassed?
Well most visiting teams view a trip to play Olney as a great experience due to the quality of our facilities and welcome. Try explaining the mess left to both away team players and supporters as well as league officials.
I appreciate that this is a problem across the town and there are views as to who is responsible but I urge all parents and youngsters to think long and hard about what is happening and for everyone to take personal responsibility. We are trying to build a facility on East Street that will be a legacy for many years and generations to come. We at the Football Club will no longer tolerate this mindless behaviour and will take all the action we can to protect our valuable asset.
Paul Tough, Chairman Olney Town Football Club
