‘Story Start’ at Olney Middle School
Children at Olney Middle School (OMS) have been busy writing some fantastic stories based on a ‘Story Start’ from the Teachers’ TV website. The children have really enjoyed writing their stories and spending longer thinking about the plot, characters and settings. They have also been given opportunities to let drama, ICT and music enhance their story ideas. All the teachers at OMS were full of praise at the quality of the children’s work and their imaginative story ideas. Year Six curriculum leader, Marie Lally, who organised the week, said, “The children were really inspired and motivated to write and the quality of the writing and the vocabulary the children were using was superb.”
The children enjoyed having a wider variety of learning styles incorporated into writing lessons: “I loved using ICT and drama to help me with my story ideas” said Jamie in Year Four.
Thomas in Year Six said, “I loved having longer to plan, write and edit my story and not having to rush it all into one lesson, I think that having time and the ‘Story Start’ made by story even better.”
The Year Six ‘Story Start’ began in an antique shop with a mysterious box that speaks to the character, Elizabeth, and lures her over to it. The box utters the phrase: “All that glitters is not gold...” but it is not clear what this means. Elizabeth is warned by the shopkeeper, Mr Henry, not to touch the box – but she does... What happens next was up to the children of Year Six!
The Year Five ‘Story Start’ began with footsteps going up to an old mansion-like building. The character enters a door marked ‘lab’ where there are several pieces of interesting science equipment; a large vat, a white jacket on the back of a chair and bottles of bubbling, smoking potions. A voice then utters the phrase “I have been expecting you.” Who was he expecting and why?
The Year Four ‘Story Start’ began in the kitchen of a house, where a boy was reading a book on dinosaurs. The boy then walked through the market and arrived at a dinosaur museum, where he began looking round the exhibits. When he got to the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex,
everything suddenly turned red and spooky...
The Year Three
‘Story Start’
began in the
woods. The
scene was lots
of tall, leafy
trees and many
different sounds
can be heard. A
hunter’s horn
blasts and the
distant sound of dogs can be heard, or is it wolves? Our hearts skip a beat and a quick swoop of the camera shows us where the sound is coming from... but what happens next?
The children came up with some fantastic variety of stories and it was an extremely difficult decision to pick just two to Pod Cast on the website! The final decision was left to the children, who voted for the story they liked best.
