Celebration of hymns
One of the annual musical treats in Newport Pagnell is the Celebration of Hymns at the Methodist Church. Usually upwards of 70 people cram into the church for a sing-along with the Milton Keynes Salvation Army Band.
This year there is to be one major change. The concert is being transferred to the much larger Parish Church. It will be held on Friday, July 6, the Band will be in attendance, the Parish Church choir will give special items and the proceeds will be divided between Willen Hospice and the West end improvements at the Parish Church.
Admission is by programmes costing £5 and the celebration starts at 7.30pm.
Christian Aid collection
The Christian Aid house-to-house collection in Newport Pagnell this year brought in £5,150.50, including several Euros! This is around £500 less than in 2006. The Lent Lunches raised £1,052.01 which together with the collection at the United service, brings the total sent to Christian Aid to £6,311.01.
£1400 from Parish fete
Heavy showers meant there were no outside stalls at the Parish Fete on June 16. Everyone ‘set up shop’ in the Parish Church and though the weather kept attendance down the event did raise a total of £1400. ❑

FiLM REviEW by Neil Stevens
More than once the defiant National Anthem of the French Republic, La Marseillaise, created uplift in cinema; in 1942’s Casablanca (US) and Tomorrow We Live (UK). This stirring piece does it for the young Edith Piaf in the wonderfully entertaining musical biopic: la Vie En Rose (12A; French Language; English subtitles). Featuring brilliant Marion Cotillard, an actress at 20 years old destined for screen stardom, this story of the Parisian ‘little sparrow’ defines a somewhat despairing life, but a life fulfilled with indestructible, incredible lung power. I can only relate that that voice makes pure glory!
Discovered singing in the street by a French impresario (Gerard Depardieu at his most benign) who takes Edith from modest Bal Tabarin to fabled Olympia Music Hall worldwide fame. Encouraged by several songwriters including Marguerite Monnot and Charles Aznavour, Edith is at her happiest trying out new songs and singing centre stage.
Director, screenwriter, dialogue adapter, Olivier Dahan (already Dead; Ghost River etc), is a master of the craft, filling a packed life showing us dates and times of appearances including those when Piaf was feted in America.
Sheer perfection comes when actress Caroline Silhol portraying Marlene Dietrich goes backstage to congratulate Piaf, a quintessential moment, no backslapping, no hugs, just two bluebirds who gave such happiness. Along with familiar, blissful songs Milord, No Regrets and the luxurious background music, Tetsuo Nagata’s real-life photography, once you experience this, you’ll see what I am raving over! ❑
