A Month in the Garden

With the days becoming shorter and nights longer and cooler, this is the time to enjoy the last throes of flowering from late perennials such as asters and sedums. Before autumn sets in, roses still need to be sprayed against mildew and hedges neatly clipped.
Late September is the perfect time to either sow new lawns or renovate old ones. Scarify vigorously to remove debris and spike to allow air into the soil. Also apply an autumn fertiliser and mowing can be reduced when the lawn starts to grow at a slower rate.
Planting at this time of year will allow perennials and shrubs to settle in before the harsh winter weather, and they will get to off to a good start next spring. K
Plant of the Month Acer griseum
Asmall tree but a magnificent one! The unusual, distinguishing feature of this tree is its bark. Even when young, the older bark peels to expose coppery-red coloured younger bark underneath.
Leaves are divided into three leaflets and change colour through the year – pinky-brown when emerging in spring before becoming green, then turning brilliant hues of red and crimson during autumn.
This maple grows well in sun or partial shade, appreciating a shelted position away from strong winds. A mature specimen can reach 5-10 metres high and will add winter interest to any garden. K
