Olney Town Cricket Club
The end of the cricket season is upon us already, and the few games that were played in between the rain showers in the last few weeks have resulted in the following league positions. After promotion last year, unfortunately the Saturday 1st XI finished second from bottom in the Premier Division, which means relegation next season to Division 2. The Saturday 2nd XI finished a respectable mid-table fifth.
The Sunday league team proved to be the stars of the year, finishing third. However, Sunday captain, Simon Gratland, was left a broken man at the end of the season, justifiably feeling ‘robbed’ of a bagful of points by an iniquitous points system which he has vowed to change at the League’s AGM next year. Good luck with that one Simon!
A select Olney XI played in Great Horwood’s 20:20 competition on Sunday 24th August, failing to progress beyond the group stages of the cricket but reaching the final of the unofficial drinking match that accompanied a great day out. In an effort to drown sorrows even further, a number of the team managed to stop at a record-breaking eight public houses on the way home to Olney! That’s an impressive 2.5 miles per pint!
As is now becoming traditional, the Pavilion will be open on Fireworks Night, which this year falls on Saturday, 1st November. You’ll get a great view from the Pavilion, so do come down and join in the fun. Hot dogs will also be on sale.
The presentation of awards to the Club’s youth section will take place at the pavilion, prior to the Fireworks on Saturday 1st November, from 5pm onwards.
The Club’s annual Presentation Evening will take place on Saturday 15th November in the private suite at The Bull in Olney. Tickets will be available from Stuart Keeping (07900 803122) or Iain Keeping (07786 638238). All past, present and future members of the Club are welcome. Attendance is compulsory for main sponsors Stephen and Kim Oakley!
Finally, the latest lucky 100 Club draw winners are Simon Gratland (who can now pay for the therapy he so deserves) with a win of £100, and Sarah Bowles who wins £30. K
