Dear Editor
There seems to be a new plague striking my home town of Newport Pagnell, it is the green wheelie bin parked permanently outside the frontage of many houses. I think that most people are aware that it is an offence to put recycling bags out too early for collection on the public highway at the front of the property, but it appears that it is acceptable for the council to put people with no or limited rear access in
the position of having to permanently exhibit this abomination on their own frontage.
There is an alternative
container that can be carried
by hand and would be more
appropriate to people with
limited rear access to their
property. But it seems to have
been kept as something of a
big secret by the council (see
photo). Most people that have spoken to me were unaware of the alternative more manageable sized container.
Newport Pagnell is an attractive little town,
but it is not improved at all by the green giant b0in80in6v_aPsrioenm.iIteirs bCegrianmnincgst.oqlxopok r0a4th/e0r8/2006 third world in places.
Whilst undoubtedly of worthy intent, I wonder how well this recycling initiative was thought through. Given any thought it must be obvious that there are many old buildings in Newport Pagnell with limited or no rear access, so inevitably the only place to store such a large piece of equipment is at the front. Also many modern houses have restricted access to the rear, given an elderly occupant it then becomes necessary to park the monster at the front of the house for all to see and enjoy. Not a pretty sight.
Personally I decided that I could not accommodate the green wheelie bin as I
couldn’t store it out of sight at the rear of my property. I rang the council and was offered the alternative smaller container which works very well. So personally I have no problem other than the damage to the appearance of my home town that I have some affection for.
To some extent we are all brainwashed into thinking that recycling is dependent on wheelie bins, this can’t be so,
it’s only one of many types of container and I think that as taxpayers we have a right to expect the council to come up with a more appropriate container, fit for purpose. Or at least publicise the availability of an alternative
The danger is that if no one says anything the same genius is going to think, this is a good idea, lets have black wheelie bins as well and really make a mess of things. So please speak up. AGW
