past
In pursuit of a
suitable 99th
year birthday
card for his
neighbour and
friend, Edward
Tilley contacted
the Phonebox
Magazine for a picture of the area to surprise her with. So we sent off a picture of Olney Church. We then discovered that she was the licensee of the Cowper’s Oak pub and married at the Underwood church many years ago. So we sent off another picture, this time of the Cowper’s Oak, for Edward to surprise her with.
Edward said: “Freda is very much part of your local history. I have learnt that she came to the Cowpers Arms as the new landlady at a time when it’s turnover was about £100 a week. She started a football team which played on Sunday mornings and she would have to get to the pub early in the morning to clean it and then go down to shout on the football team from the touchlines. After the game she would open the pub. She tells me that she got the skittles going and darts and soon the turnover began to climb. She has made me laugh with the story of the pubs tug-o-war team on Boxing Day and how the anchor man tied the rope to a lamp post. She says she was married at the church at Weston. She now lives at Brixham, Devon, in the same road as I do, on the top of a hill and I communicate with her occasionally by telephone as I live lower down the hill and am 92. So thank you once again for the lovely pictures of Olney Church and the Cowpers Oak, which this time will be her Christmas Card and which I am sure will make her day, best wishes, Ted Tilley.”
