Lions Clubs International Foundation – Lions Hope for Haiti
Following the devastating earthquake, Lions members around the world responded generously and quickly to the Lions Clubs
International Foundation (LCIF) designated fund ‘Lions Hope for Haiti’ a special project which has mobilized over US$325,000 within hours of the news of the tragedy breaking.
LCIF is working directly with the Lions Clubs in Haiti as well as Lions in neighbouring countries to assess the immediate needs and also develop a long-term reconstruction plan for the communities affected. LCIF Chairperson Al Brandel and his wife Dr. Maureen Murphy are now in the Dominican Republic to lead a team delivering urgently needed supplies into Haiti. Immediate relief efforts will center on providing water, food, medicine, tents and other essential needs Lions around the world are also assisting:
• Lions in neighbouring Caribbean countries are sending cargo containers of targeted supplies through their connections with local transportation companies.
• Lions in Sweden are sending large tents through the Swedish government to provide housing for those who are now homeless as well as relief workers something they effectively did after the China earthquake.
• Lions from Canada were in the area helping to establish a clean water system for an orphanage when the earthquake hit. They have since redirected their efforts and have
established a make-shift medical clinic,
treating many of the injured.
• Lions are contributing generously,
some examples include: US$86,000 pledged from Lions in Norway; US$20,000 from Lions in China and US$14,000 from District 105-I in the UK.
Like other previous disasters, LCIF is not only committed to meeting the immediate needs of the people, but will be working through the Lions in the region to provide relief for years to come. As an example, LCIF is still helping those in South Asia recover from the December 2005 tsunami, Gulf States recover from Hurricane Katrina in August 2006 and China to rebuild following the May 2008 earthquake. After other relief organizations have moved on to the next disaster, Lions will still be on the ground, overseeing long- term reconstruction projects.
Similar to other disasters, Lions hope to rebuild homes and hospitals, redevelop the eye care delivery system, human resource support and provide help for disabled, including those disabled as a result of this disaster.
“Our Lions Club will also be looking at the best way we can support the LCIF project “said John Ferris, President of the Newport Pagnell & Olney Lions Club. “Lions Clubs are committed to bringing aid to those impacted by the earthquake in Haiti as they have done in many similar situations in the past. Thanks to
the support from people in our community, our club and LCIF the Local Lions clubs operating in Haiti will be able to help so many more,”
Donors can assist Lions on the ground
and Lions Clubs International Foundation in responding to this disaster with a designated donation to the "LCIF Haiti Earthquake Relief" Fund.
In common with Lions rules on charitable donations, all administrative costs are covered by interest earned on investments so donations, via a Lions club can be made in total confidence and the knowledge that 100 percent of every donation will go directly to Haiti relief.
LCIF just recently received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the highest rating possible from the independent charity evaluator and a higher rating than Red Cross and several other relief organizations. In 2007 LCIF was named the #1 non-governmental organization to partner with, a title our Foundation still holds today.
To donate online, visit www.lcif.org/donate and select Disaster. Please include “LCIF Haiti Earthquake Relief” in the comments section. Donations may also be made direct to the Newport Pagnell & Olney Lions club by sending a cheque to: Trevor Aldred, Treasurer, Newport Pagnell & Olney Lions Club, 16 Ferne Furlong, Olney MK46 5EN.
