Brownies learn Communication Skills in London
On thursDaY 24th February Brownies from 3rd & 4th newport pagnell travelled to London for a day out visiting first the Bank of england Museum where the girls received a presentation from the staff about money- learning about bank notes, interest and what happens to old notes. also looking at old and new money and getting the chance to touch a gold bar - all girls had a go at lifting the bar. Most of us wanted to take it home with us!!
Our next stop was on to hMs Belfast where we first had a well deserved lunch and then we all want off in small groups to explore the ship and learn our communication skills - we learnt how to use morse code and all managed to send a message using the morse code, we also learnt how to say our names in the phonetic alphabet. then looking at the code list of flags and the flags that were flying we all managed to unscramble the ships communication number and radio call sign. the girls had now earned their Communication Badges.
While exploring the Belfast we saw how the sailors lived, learnt about the ships use in the war and what life on board the ship was like. there are a lot of life-like figures dotted around the ship - which most of the girls did not like!! some of the party climbed to the very top of the ship to the bridge and got to try on sailors hats etc.....
also one of our new adult leaders decided to renew her promise while on hMs Belfast which the girls were pleased about.
Royal British Legion Award
Mike Barry, vice-Chairman of Buckinghamshire County Committee of the royal British Legion, presenting a County Certificate to rod Moore “In appreciation of the dedicated and zealous services given in furthering the objectives of the royal British Legion in Buckinghamshire.”
rod, who was poppy appeal Organiser for Lavendon Branch for 10 years until his retirement last year, has been Committee Member for many years, and a member of the royal British Legion since 1952.
Olney Town Cricket Club
since 2004, his efforts have helped to raise over £33,000 for the poppy appeal. the crowning achievement was winning the sir John & Lady hall trophy (awarded to the Branch, without a Club, having the biggest percentage increase in poppy sales) twice during his tenure as paO.
the presentation took place at the annual Members’ social evening on 12th March at Lavendon village hall, with musical entertainment provided by adagio from Milton Keynes.
Over the past few weeks, the Cricket Club has been preparing for the fresh cricket season. Our indoor net sessions for adults and juniors have been up and running at the sports hall at the Ousedale school since the beginning of January and we’re now busy getting fixtures arranged for our adult and junior sides.
as many people in the town will know by now, the Cricket Club (and, in fact, the whole of the Olney community) has very recently suffered a tragic blow, with the loss of one of the Club’s great personalities, Mike “hammer” Lord. as well as contributing hugely to the running of the Club, particularly through his management of its bar, Mike was, for many of our members, our sponsors and our friends, the Club’s public persona. We will all miss Mike enormously and our thoughts are with his family. During the summer months the Club will take the opportunity to remember and celebrate Mike’s life and, in particular, his contribution to cricket and the community. Details of this will follow.
Mike would be the first to encourage the Club to press on with its preparations for the new season and this is, indeed, what we must do. Dave hurley has been appointed as the Club’s new head of Juniors. We will be holding our
Youth registration evening on Monday 11th April 2011 from 6pm at the Olney Cricket pavilion. please come along if you want to register your sons or daughters. this year, we intend to start taking junior members from the age of eight right up to age 16 for our Colts side.
the cricket season proper kicks off on Sunday 24th April although our first home game will be on Saturday 30th April. We have a full season of adult matches on both saturdays and sundays, through to the end of august and more than 50 junior matches will be played during the summer weeks. We are always looking for new players to join our ranks, and both adults and juniors in the local area are welcome to join the Club. Fixture cards will be available shortly and can be obtained from Club representatives. alternatively all of the fixtures are on the Club’s website - www.olneytown.play-cricket.com.
this year, the Club is seeking to expand its cricket square and to install an artificial pitch which will help absorb the general wear and tear of increasingly busy seasons. to help us raise money for this we are currently renewing sponsorship arrangements with our many local
business
sponsors
and a range
of marketing
opportunities
are available
to sponsors.
If you would
like to
sponsor the
Club, can
you please
contact our
sponsorship secretary, stephen Oakley at info@stephenoakley.co.uk or the Club Chairman, David harrison, at dvdharrison@aol.com.
We are also always on the look out for tea Ladies for the home fixtures, who will receive a modest remuneration for their services - so if anyone out there is interested please email dvdharrison@aol.com, or call 01234 345789.
the Club’s pre-season get-together will be at the pavilion on the evening of Friday 29th april. the bar will be open from around 6pm to usher in the new season. We look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible.
a good time was had by all and the day whizzed by and before we knew it, it was 4.30 and time to board the coach home. We all returned to newport pagnell about 6.45 happy and tired having had a great day out and earnt our Communication Badges. the girls also got a special hMs Belfast badge as souvenir of their day out.
