Carol’s Progress...
World Lymphona Awareness Day is on September 15th, so what better time to update you on Carol’s Progress, the recipient of a Stem Cell Transplant. If you remember, Emma Hall of Olney, wrote a story on her experiences being a donor, this resulted in Helen Jarvis, Carol’s mum, writing to us with her story. Here she gives us an update of Carol’s progress. Both stories were reported in previous issues of Phonebox covering each side of the Stem Cell Transplant process.
Iʼd like to update Phonebox readers on Carolʼs progress after her Donor Stem Cell Transplant.
tour tough, but she managed them, sleeping as and when she could. Room service in that first hotel was really valuable, she could phone for food when needed, while still being able to rest on her bed! She duly went on the tour bus, participating in the concerts all the way down the eastern coast to New York.
Lymphoma is the UKʼs fifth commonest cancer, and the week of 10th to 16th of September is Lymphatic Cancer Awareness week. World Lymphoma Awareness Day is on September 15th.
Carol on tour in Arizona with Seal
Carol is doing pretty well, though she still needs red blood cell transplants every two to three weeks. Astoundingly, as I type this she is en-route to Arizona, on tour with the singer Seal. He was anxious for her to join the tour, her Doctors agreed that if she had full health insurance cover, she could go, and Sealʼs managers have ensured all her flights are upgraded to Business Class, and insured her too.
She flew back part way through the tour, after just over two weeks, for hospital checks and a top up of red cells again, and flew back out for Mid-west concerts. Again the travel was tiring, but she had not fully adapted to UK time, knowing she would only be back for a very few days.
and the place where Martin Luther King was assassinated!
She found the time transition very tough this time, having a slight cold didnʼt help, she said after flying out to Canada it felt like running full pelt at a brick wall! She had a dayʼs rest and still found the two rehearsal days for the
I am really grateful to each and every person who donates blood, and also especially to those like Emma who are also on the Bone Marrow Donation register! Please all try to join up!
She is now back again on the tour bus (very luxurious) driving from Tulsa via Amarillo (all names with song references!) through the Rockies, eventually for a concert in Las Vegas, and following on to Los Angeles and San Francisco. When on a tour, the regular tourist places do tend to get by-passed but on occasion if well enough and not too tired, she has visited a few places, like Elvisʼ grave,
As her Mum I am very proud of all she has achieved in spite of the eight years fighting her Lymphoma. I attend the local Lymphoma Association support group, which I have found very helpful, being a member enables me to go to that, also the Association have many booklets, leaflets, and a free phone line for support too.

Jayne Stevens Holistics A unique variety of therapy
Things have moved on apace in the field of holistic therapy and with the setting up of the Government-supported Complimentary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), clients can rest assured they are getting the best quality of treatment available. One such practitioner, Jayne Stevens, who is registered as a Massage Therapist and Reiki Master Practitioner takes her work very seriously indeed. Having added Sports Massage to her repertoire, Jayne undertook specialist training in Myofascial Release and
Trigger-Point Therapy, modalities which are making great strides forward in the area of muscular pain.
Jayne says ‘Release of the fascia surrounding
muscles can ease both chronic and acute pain that has not necessarily responded to other physical
treatment. For example, one of my clients had already experienced frozen shoulder and was
horrified when her other shoulder was diagnosed with the same condition. Because she knows how debilitating it can be

she is delighted that within three months of treatment it is, in her own words “no longer an issue”. Frozen shoulder normally takes between eighteen month
and three years to clear and she is thrilled with
the results’.
Of course Jayne can provide all the normal relaxing treatments too, such as hot stones and Indian head massage and is also a teaching Reiki Master, trained first locally and latterly by one of the world’s leading Masters, William Lee Rand. And on top of that, she has also taken the time to study for a CPCAB Certificate in Counselling Studies, so you really are in safe hands on all levels!
