the new ʻsmallspaceʼ model shows run by the HaMeX organisers, was a wild success, mainly as thatʼs what everybody was saying.
Held on July 1st, this is the third model show that is being run at Hanslope Village Hall, a ʻsmall but selectʼ location. The organisers Paul Fitzmaurice and Mat Irvine, started these model events a few years ago, with the actual ʻHaMeXʼ show – standing for Hanslope Model Expo that runs near to Christmas. The model car show, Automodellismo, was added, this year running in April, which also featured full-size cars in the car park outside. The idea to run a model show based around space and science fiction actually came from Paul but was based on Matʼs experience in special effects, and to this end he bought in two colleagues. Firstly Mike Tucker, also from effects, and second as the main guest, the actor John Leeson, best known as the ʻvoice
the real screen-used K-9s; the original first built way back in 1977, and the ʻrusty K-9ʼ from the story School Reunion, this was an added bonus. And to the delight of any visitors, and locals of Hanslope for that matter, the car park was taken over, not by cars this time, but by Daleks. space”. (And keep an eye on the website.) Meanwhile the next show in the calendar is HaMeX, now in its fourth year. This will be held on 2nd December. HaMeX is the swap- meet show, where modellers gather to sell of old kits and buy new ones, just in time for all those Christmas presents.
Inside the Hall, both rooms were full of science fiction model clubs and organisations putting on a show of SF models an props, some original, some recreated. A special award was devised for the event, and the ASA, the ʻSpace 1999ʼ Forum, were presented with ʻBest in Solar Systemʼ award, a black slab of Perspex, mimicking the monolith from the movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
