Physiotherapy for Back Pain
Hello, I am Eileen Lewis, I have BSc in Physiotherapy and also am a qualified Acupuncturist with over 20 years experience. In the July edition I discussed neck pain and this month I would like to cover Back Pain.
At some point nearly all of us will unfortunately suffer from Back Pain. This may cause pain and stiffness in the upper back (thoracic spine) around the ribs and shoulder blades or lower back pain (lumbar spine). The pain may refer to the buttocks, legs, trunk, abdominal or groin region. You may also experience pins and needles in the legs or feet.
Many of my patients present with these symptoms and after a thorough examination the cause of the problem can be established. It may be the vertebral joints of the thoracic or lumbar spine, the sacroiliac joints
of the pelvis, the
nerves or the
surrounding muscles
or fascia that are the source of your Back Pain.

Depending on the source of your pain Physiotherapy treatment that will facilitate recovery may consist of Mobilising or Core Stability/Pilates based exercises, Myofascial Release Techniques, Joint Mobilisations or Manipulations, Ultrasound or Acupuncture. I also always give general advice regarding management of Back Pain in both the short term and long-term, in order to help alleviate the acute pain and prevent recurring problems.
