Scarecrows and more at the Lavendon Village Show
Parents, grandparents, children and friends flocked to this yearʼs Show on Saturday, 8th September, in record numbers. In the week leading up to the Show, scarecrows started appearing in the village, the artist painting the village church, the rock climber scaling guttering, children engaged in various pastimes – the ingenuity of the designs was amazing and perhaps this helped to publicise the Show. The lovely weather also encouraged people to get out and about.
won one cup outright for his vegetables and shared the onion cup with Bob Feasey, who entered 17 exhibits. Sam Boon put in 21 entries and won the cookery cup and Peter Lofts had 9 entries and won cups for his chrysanthemums and dahlias. Other winners were Ruth Welsh for handicrafts and Richard Boon for baking. The new Hipkin Trophy for the Visual Arts was won jointly by Ron Blomfield and Norma Jackson.
winner was Elizabeth Raymond. Graham Mabutt and Janet Howe, who was head teacher at Lavendon until last year, were the judges and Graham presented the award.
Some 22 scarecrows were on display in the School field and the Judges, Debbie Brock and Peter Geary found it very difficult to choose winners. In the end, they awarded the childrenʼs prize to Louie Swift, with his puzzled construction engineer and the adult prize went to Kath Collins, with her Jubilee street tea party for four.
Clive Bevan exhibited a prize marrow that had to be wheeled in on a trolley and it took two people to lift onto the display table. It was enormous.
The Show made a profit in the region of £850 - well in excess of last year's figure - and it will go towards the upkeep of the Village Hall, which is facing ever-spiralling costs.
113 exhibitors submitted 364 entries spread over 113 classes and although many people put in just one or two exhibits, some entered a lot more. John Shann put in 29 entries and
In the Childrenʼs categories, the outright trophy winners were: Florence Welsh, Joshua Raymond and there were joint winners, Ruby Allen, Amber Jeffcoate, Luke Ashton, Archie Bierton/Gary Jackson, Luke Ashton and Lydia Wallace.
Judging by the Olympic/Paralympic smiles, everybody seemed to have enjoyed themselves, so the exhibitors, the sponsors, the judges, the teachers, the children, the behind-the-scene helpers and the committee can give themselves a gentle pat on the back for helping to make the Show a success, a Show which first started over 60 years ago, during the Second World War.
A number of children turned up in fancy dress and then paraded their outfits on the stage before an admiring audience. The first-ever
Most of the remaining exhibits were then sold off and many a household benefited from being able to buy modestly-priced fresh vegetables, fruits, jams, cakes, flowers and handicraft items.
