only will the local community in Senegal benefit from the ʻnest eggʼ which we have provided, but the Children of Grendon CofE Primary school gain a fantastic experience of helping those less well off than themselves – a bit like being a Lion actually.
February 2012, it was forced to enter Voluntary Liquidation - a victim of the current economic climate.
It was clear to us that the need for the type of material developed by Tacade was a vital resource which schools had been finding increasingly useful in the current social climate. How best then to fill the gap created by the loss of Tacade was a question we needed to answer. With Tacade resources already being utilised in 70% of the primary and 50% of Secondary schools, there was no better alternative for Lions than to obtain the asset that had been Tacade. Consequently, the publications stock, publishing rights and intellectual property were taken into Lions ownership as we formed our new company, Lions MD105 Lifeskills Ltd.
One thing about being in a Lions club, you never know what you will be asked to support!
Grendon CofE Primary School contacted us about a project they had set up to help a small community near to Ziguinchor, in Senegal (you should have heard our service chairman Tony, trying to pronounce that one).
The school have, with the help of an ʻEnterprise Partnerʼ, in the area, set up a sustainable business - a ʻChicken Projectʼ which aims to provide life changing opportunities for those involved. The village is economically very
Talking of eggs – the Chocolate Variety
When you next visit a pub, club or coffee shop you may see a large Chocolate Easter egg.
This is likely to be part of our annual easter egg raffle which for only £1, you can be in with a chance of winning the egg on display.
This annual event sees the Lions club working with the proprietors/licencees to raise funds on a 50:50 basis with at least half the proceeds going to a charity or good cause of the owners choice.
disadvantaged, isolated from the main business hub and has suffered badly due to the recent civil war which affected the region.
The project started with just 15 chickens two years ago and despite numerous problems, not the least of which was Monsoon rains, it has continued to thrive providing not just income but work and a food source to the community.
The head teacher, an ex Olney boy, came to us for help as the pupils want to help expand the business by replicating the project elsewhere in the community. They plan to help purchase further land and materials to create six new chicken houses and have set a target of raising £6000 to achieve their target.
With all the building materials and labour costs being estimated at £500, the club has injected that sum into the project and whilst we may not actually receive any interest in our ʻinvestmentʼ, hope that not
Do please buy a ticket and support this event which raises over £1000 each year for a wide range of often very local causes. It is likely to be less than the coffee or drink you are consuming but your £1 can make a massive difference to someone. So next time you are going for a refreshment, look around and if you see an egg – ask for a ticket and hereʼs hoping you end up with egg on your face. In the nicest possible way, of course. Calling all Teachers
If you are a school teacher, you may have heard of an organisation called Tacade. This leading not-for-profit charitable organisation developed resources to promote the health and well- being of children and young people locally, nationally and internationally. With programs aimed at helping schools address issues of alcohol, drug and gambling abuse; homophobia, change and bereavement, sexual health and smoking, Tacade was clearly a leader in itʼs field and with Lions Clubs in the UK being one of the major sponsors of these programs, we anticipated many years of mutual partnership.

We have some wonderful resources. Two years ago we launched our bereavement resource "Life Changes" which helps teachers deal with bereavement situations affecting the school and their pupils and were delighted when a number of local schools took up our offer of financial assistance in purchasing the resource.
Backed by a grant of $10,000 from Lions Quest, an international programme funded by Lions Clubs International Foundation has opened up the prospect of trading our Lifeskills resources at an international level
If you are a teacher, governor, parent or simply someone who works with today's youth and would like more information about the resources, please get in touch with us via our website to see if we can help.
