Alex Wakely opens Yardley Hastings Primary School’s
new play area
Northampton County Cricket Captain Alex Wakely was the special guest star opening the new play area at Yardley Hastings Primary School on 27th February.
Yardley Hastings Primary School is an Outstanding primary school for children aged 3-11 in the small conservation village of Yardley Hastings. It was in desperate need of new playground equipment as its playing field had become too wet and muddy to play in during autumn and winter – and even summer last year.

new climbing trail is a
real example of the ‘Big Society’ working collectively to enrich communities. Sport and exercise play a vital role in children’s development and playtime is a daily opportunity to run around in the fresh air. The children are incredibly excited to have the new equipment and enjoyed “officially opening” the climbing trail with an Opening Ceremony. We thought having a local successful sporting star such as Alex Wakely at our Opening Ceremony would be an exciting way to link sport, exercise and achievement and leave an ever-lasting memory for all the children, teachers, parents and our community.
The parents and teachers association (Friends of Yardley Hastings School, also known as FOYS) is a charity dedicated to raise funds for the school to improve pupils’ educational experiences. FOYS sought to raise funds for new play equipment through cake sales, fun runs, summer fetes and many other activities. It managed to raise half of the cost of an all-weather climbing trail. The other half was kindly met through a part-donation and part-loan from the village’s charity – the
