International impact
At our March meeting, we were visited by Andrew Betts, CEO of Advantage Africa, an Olney based charity which works with local people in Kenya and Uganda. An extremely interesting and thought provoking presentation from him gave us an insight to the work of his charity which focuses on the use of local champions to help determine and support the needs of the local communities. He outlined the excellent work they have done to help people become self sufficient, particularly helping families where the stigma of disability or aids is quite profound. Following the presentation, we were delighted to be able to make a donation of £500 to assist them in their work. Amazingly, two days later we received word that £200 from our donation had just been transferred to the Single Parentsʼ Association of Uganda (SPAU) for books and other educational resources for the nursery in Nsumbi village and the remaining £300 of the Lions Club funding is being allocated towards the construction of a simple kitchen for the community nursery so that the young children can have a nutritious meal during the school day. Cash handed over in Olney on Monday and already making a difference in Uganda by the end of that week - Now that really is an efficient donation.
One Shot, One Life
Readers of our Lions Den feature will have already seen details of the Lions Measles Initiative which, working in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will be driving a major vaccination project to help children avoid the trauma of Measles. In this country, we rarely see the massive life changing impact which measles is capable of causing but that is not the case worldwide.
As part of our support to the campaign,
OLNEY PRIVATE HIRE & TAXI SERVICE
our club has contributed £100 to the fund which will have immediately grown to £150 thanks to the match funding arrangement with the Gates Foundation. If any reader would like to make a personal contribution, please visit our website for details on how you can do this.
Olney Jazz Club
A member of our Friends group, Alan Haughton who runs the Olney Jazz Club is more often in our company helping us when we are carrying out some of our service activities. We were delighted to be able to give him support at his extremely popular Jazz evening in the Carlton House club when a large party of Lions and their friends enjoyed the eveningʼs entertainment which was provided by Gary Grace and his King of Swings show. A great nightʼs entertainment.
More Malt
The second event in our Whisky Tasting fundraising series took place at the Carlton House Club when 60 Malt Whisky enthusiasts convened to taste a range of whiskies from The Balvenie Distillery under the guidance of Dr Andrew Forrester, Balvenie UK Ambassador. We also had the very unusual experience of being able to sample new make spirit which had only come out of the Still a few days previously and at an alcoholic strength of 70.8% - the reception it received was mixed – a bit like the
