Physiotherapy for Elbow Problems
Hello, I am Eileen Lewis I have a BSc in Physiotherapy and also am a qualified acupuncturist with over 20 years experience in both the NHS and Private Sector. My Private Practice is based in Turvey where there is free parking on-site.
Tennis Elbow/ Lateral Epicondylitis is a common problem causing pain on the outside of the elbow and into the forearm, made worse by generally using your wrist or hand, activities such as writing, using a mouse or keyboard, DIY, gripping, picking things up or carrying something, not just playing tennis! Pain on the outside of the elbow may also be as a result of a bursitis or synovitis of the joint.
Pain on the inside of the elbow, is more commonly known as Golfers Elbow, another overuse type of injury. The muscles and tendons become more painful with activity and often are tender to the touch. The nerves
around the
elbow can become trapped (radius or ulnar nerves) causing pain, pins and needles and/or numbness in the elbow, forearm and fingers. Pain at the back of the elbow could be due to bursitis, (Students Elbow), caused by leaning on a hard surface repeatedly with the elbow using the typical “head in hand” position, Osteoarthritis of the joint, or Impingement, whereby structures become pinched between the joint surfaces due to repeated activity or hypermobility (in laymanʼs terms double jointed). More serious problems of the elbow include fractures, dislocations, ligament and tendon ruptures. Pain in the arm, elbow, forearm or hand may also originate from the neck or thoracic spine.
