After many months of hard work and quite a bit of worry during the cold spring, Sunday 2 June dawned bright and sunny. This was a huge relief for the ladies of Inner Wheel of Newport Pagnell, four of whom had offered to open their gardens in aid of Heart Research UK. As anyone who has ever opened their garden to the public will know, it’s a nerve-racking time as the weather is such a significant factor – not only for the open day itself but for the growing season before-hand. In addition, there’s a lot of hard work to be done to get a garden looking good. President Rita Burge and Inner Wheel members Doreen Beeton, Jacquy Massingberd-Mundy and friend of Inner Wheel, Sue Burrill all took on the challenge and worked like trojans.
All their hard work paid off, however, as the beautiful gardens, delightful weather and delicious lunches and teas made for a most enjoyable day. A steady stream of visitors toured the four gardens in Newport Pagnell with a gentle stroll between each and refreshments available at all stops! In addition, plant sales by Rotary colleagues, a tombola with an array of generous prizes and a raffle for a beautiful quilt all contributed to the fantastic final sum. In all, £1,853.15 was raised for Heart Research UK and Rita and her fellow Inner Wheel members are looking forward to presenting a cheque to Lynne Desborough of Heart Research UK at the next Inner Wheel meeting on 18 June. A big thank you to not only the four garden owners who worked so hard to achieve this fantastic result but also to fellow Inner Wheel members who helped with refreshments and in many other ways, to Rotarians who supported the event and to all residents of Newport Pagnell and surrounding villages who turned out to support the event.
