It seems only a short time since the end of the last football season, but the 2013-14 season is rapidly approaching and anyone suffering ‘football withdrawal symptoms’ will soon be able to enjoy live football at Willen Road again. Dates have already been arranged for three pre-season friendly matches at Willen Road. On Saturday 13th July (early kick-off time of 1.30pm) Newport Pagnell Town will play a Milton Keynes Dons team, which is expected to be made up of a mixture of rst team, ‘fringe’ and youth team players.
Saturday 27th July will bring Southern League opposition to Willen Road, when the visitors will be Chesham, and then on Saturday 3rd August Newport will be at home to Dorking
(both 3pm kick-off). The composition of the United Counties League Premier Division for the 2013-14 season has been announced and contains ve changes.
Teams leaving the UCL Premier Division are
St Ives (promoted), Blackstones and Irchester
(both relegated), Quorn and Shepshed (both
moved ‘sideways’ into the Midland Alliance).
These are replaced by Woodford United
(relegated from the Southern League Central
Division, after nishing last season with zero
points and a goal difference of minus 164!),
Northampton Sileby Rangers and Rushden &
Diamonds (both promoted from UCL Division
Eastern Counties League). Godmanchester last appeared at Willen Road in the 2011-12 season, when Newport defeated them 3-1 in the 3rd round of the FA Vase (photo is from that match).
Local rivals Kempston clung to their Premier Division status, just two points above the relegation places at the end of last season, so Newport can look forward to more matches against them and other local rivals Wellingborough.
