Work Experience Reception
Celebrates Successes
Whilst work experience seems to be becoming a thing of the past, Wellingborough School has recently proved the successes of their work experience scheme. Wellingborough School held a reception on the 17th October, which allowed guests to hear directly from students about their work experience. The students all spoke highly of the invaluable lessons they had learnt, at jobs ranging from zookeepers to archaeologists, lawyers to medics. Companies offered their guidance to 147 year 11 and lower sixth students for a week in July, giving them first-hand experience of the real working world. Not confining education to the classroom equips students to leave school with something more than grades and certificates. Whilst these are highly important, this first-hand experience puts students in a better position to be sure which career paths they want to follow. The school believes that this program increases the student’s employability; in a climate where jobs are few and far between, students need to do all they can to help them stand out
from the crowd and secure a job on leaving school or college.
Students had to work hard, alongside support from Jo Matthews, Head of Careers, to get a work experience position, applying with CVs and attending interviews. This provided good practice, showing you have to work hard to get into a career. For some students, it was an opportunity to help them weigh up various career prospects, with some deciding they would like a more outside job after spending the week in an office, and others being able to confirm that they wanted to further their chosen career path after enjoying their week. With the countless successes Wellingborough has seen from this scheme, it raises the question as to why it isn’t required of all students nationwide. Clearly the students of Wellingborough have benefitted from the support of both the school and companies, and will be entering the working world a little more prepared.
