Gearing up for Edinburgh, comedy’s biggest moment
Next month means one thing to comedians – Edinburgh Festival Fringe. And they are all getting ready for the biggest event on their calendars with warm-up shows across the country. On July 4, Peter Firman (pictured right) will perform his Edinburgh Preview at The Stables. Appearing as part of the Milton Keynes International Festival, comedian Josh Widdicombe will be performing stand-up at the venue on July 24. In Newport Pagnell, Bobby Mair will take to the stage on July 6 at The Cannon.
Arguably the most famous British comedy troupe in history recently announced a series of dates at the 02, and Monty Python isn’t just for lucky ticket holders as it will be broadcast live around the world on July 20. With 450 British cinemas showing it, there are local screenings are at Odeon Milton Keynes, Cineworld Bedford, Vue Cinemas Northampton and The Castle Theatre, Wellingborough. Outdoor theatre, junior performances and a touch of nostalgia
July is notoriously quiet for theatres, but it doesn’t mean there aren’t shows going on. On July 4, the London Contemporary Theatre Company will present A Midsummer Night’s Dream on an open-air stage. The group is back the following week on July 12 with Treasure Island. In the same weekend (July 10-12), budding actors will get the chance to show their skills in Bugsy Malone at Stantonbury Theatre.
Northampton’s Royal & Derngate will play host to a range of choirs this month, including Northamptonshire’s Junior Orchestra, Jazz 3, the Junior String Orchestra, the Junior Girls Choir and the County Boys Choir. The NMPAT Summer Festival of Music will also include performances from the Training Wind Orchestra, Jazz 2, the Training Guitar Ensemble and Choir.
Similarly, and in collaboration with local schools, the Music for Bedford Borough will present a programme of performances from July 1-4 at the Bedford Corn Exchange. Visitors to the venue on August 1 will have the chance to indulge in some musical nostalgia as There’ll Always Be England will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War and the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
