The Lions’ Den
Newport Pagnell and Olney Lions Club
Muster for charity
Our Lions Club runs events, but we also support organisers of other community events. It’s important to keep local
activities alive.
One such event is the Newport Pagnell Muster, a set of walks made of different lengths and difficulties. Its aim is to promote health, charity and fun. Taking place on September 13th, it promises to be the biggest yet.
The Muster demonstrates the benefits of Bury Field as a local amenity, and it gives people a chance to raise funds for good causes, as well as having a fun day with lots of walking.
This year will include a two mile Britain in Bloom/Cream Tea walk, led by two members of the Newport Pagnell Gardening Club. They will be pointing out the town’s floral features throughout the walk. Commencing at 2.30pm, you can sign up on the back of the flyer, which is widely available in the town centre.
Walking is great exercise that helps improve health and, hopefully this year, our Lions Club will be putting on our walking shoes and joining in, or helping with some marshalling. For more information on the Muster, go to newportmuster.org.uk where you can enrol for a walk.
If you want to help out, visit our website at newportpagnelllionsclub.org and send us a note via our Contact page.
We will get back to you with more information about the event.
Lions’ shoot in Rushden
No, this wasn’t an attempt to catch any escaped wildlife, but an event organised by a neighbouring Lions Club. It was just one of the many inter-club social events which we enjoy as being part of the largest service organisation in the world.
Rushden Lions Club held a clay pigeon shooting day, a repeat of a similar event from last year, which saw members of our club taking part in their first-ever shotgun experience.
None of us (or most of the others that attended) had handled a shotgun, let alone pulled the trigger before. It was with more than a little trepidation that we stood between the safety straw bales, loaded the gun, shouted ‘pull’ and (initially) shut our
eyes as the gun responded to our squeeze on the trigger. There was mixed results as far as hitting the clay discs was concerned, but we all thoroughly enjoyed the day so much that many of us will be heading out to Rushden for a repeat performance of last year’s successful day out.
The £15 cost includes use of guns, clays, tuition by qualified instructors and cartridges. This is fairly cheap, but we also had a BBQ on the day.
This was the icing on the cake for us, and all the profits from the day’s proceedings will be given to the Children’s Air Ambulance Charity.
Our Olney Calendar 2015
We have been astounded and delighted by the sheer number of photos that have been put forward for inclusion in the next Olney calendar.
Not surprisingly, we have had lots of photos of the church, meadows and Emberton Park, but we were a little disappointed at the lack of those depicting town events, such as the Cherry Fair, Rugby 7s, Fireworks Display etc. Also, there are very few photos of the town buildings so, if we repeat the process next year, we encourage everyone to get their camera out and capture more photos that show Olney and the surrounding villages at their best.
Meanwhile, visit our website to see the standard of photos that have come in and keep an eye out for the chosen 14 photos in next month’s Phonebox magazine.
Newport Pagnell Town Calendar 2015
Yes, we are doing a Newport Pagnell Calendar too. This will contain photos from the council archives and will provide a nostalgic look back into the history of Newport Pagnell – something not to be missed. This calendar can be pre-ordered now, and it’s only £5. Visit our website at:

Go to our Contact page and let us know how many you wish to have put aside for you. Don’t forget to give us your contact details so we can arrange a delivery day (COD for local orders, postage as incurred added for any that require posting.)
