Readers’ Letters Goodbye from BLOT
We were delighted to hear recently that RWE have announced “It’s with great disappointment we have decided to cease our interest in the Nun Wood Wind Farm development”. Since then the monitoring mast has been taken away and so we can once again enjoy our wonderful countryside without a constant reminder that it could so easily be destroyed. Although another company could theoretically come along and pursue the site, we feel that this is very unlikely unless there is a radical change of government policy after the next election.
We have concluded that after nine years our fight against the Nun Wood windfarm is finally over and BLOT can disband. We would like to thank everyone that has supported us over the years and wish you all a Happy and Peaceful Christmas. Brian Skittrall, BLOT Chairman
90th Birthday Thanks
To you all, thank you very much for coming to my 90th birthday party, especially for the donations for £200 to Olney Cobbs Garden Surgery and £200 to the British Heart Foundation; also thanks for all the cards and presents. Thank you all once again. Barbara Page
Affordable housing in Olney?
After reading through the questionnaire sent from Olney Town Council, I am mindful that the first page covers the issue of housing. Olney has to identify sites for 325 - 350 additional homes before 2031. So the question is, what type of housing is needed and where should it be located?
As a resident of Olney since 1978, we were enticed here because there was affordable three bedroomed semi-detached homes, ideal as a first home and later suitable for a young family, being built in what was called “Poppyfields” – on Spinney Hill Road – near the infant school.
I believe that in order to avoid an inverted pyramid of older people with fewer younger people living in Olney, we definitely need to encourage the Council and subsequently developers to provide affordable housing for the younger generation and their families. This will inject the necessary level of homeowners who will use local facilities and shops.
But who at the moment, can afford the property in Olney? Certainly not younger people since housing here is far too expensive, either to rent or buy. Our children have been forced to live outside of Olney despite having good jobs. The selling off of council housing in the late 70s and throughout the 80s, by the then Conservative government, unfortunately paved the way for the lack of affordable rental accommodation. Please bear this in mind when filling in the questionnaire
Let’s look to the future, build affordable houses, moreover encourage Housing Associations to make the necessary provision for the younger generation, even if the current government is not doing so.
