1917. He was wounded at Messines on 7 June 1917, but returned to the Battalion on 26 June.
On 29 July 1917 while in his headquarters in Canada Street tunnels near Zillebeke, Edgar, hearing of the loss of officers from the walking wounded, decided to lead the Battalion from the front. He moved to Shrewsbury Forest and was killed in action on 31st July at Lower Star Post while attempting to bomb a machine gun that had trapped a detachment of his Battalion. The Battalion history says: “The fact that his body could not be recovered and buried, as all ranks would have wished, was perhaps a good thing, as it helped keep alive his memory in the Battalion, and inspired in everyone the resolve to avenge his death and to end the war that had already caused so much misery and suffering”.
It is reported that of the 400 or more volunteers that served in ‘Mobbs Own’ Company, only 85 survived the War. On 10th February 1921 the first Edgar Mobbs Memorial Match was played at Franklins Gardens, Northampton between two of the great rugby loves in his life, East Midlands and the Barbarians.
The First World War also took a sad toll of Olney players. Sixteen playing members lost their lives, including Edgar Mobbs. Mobbs was one of the three Olney players to play for England in the Military International Match. Dr. Gilbert Bull, who also played for England, lost his life too. Honours gained by Olney players included the D.S.O. to Lt. Col. Mobbs, D.C.M to G. Bamwell, and MMs to F. Millward and Tom Clifton.

Olney are participating in what I hope will be a fitting tribute to the efforts and sacrifices of so many service personnel. We have chosen this date, as 100 years ago on that weekend, a Charity International Match was played at Northampton between Scotland and England with several players involved with Olney RFC playing for England, including Edgar Mobbs. The match was played to help Edgar Mobbs form his own Battalion to which many sports players, and people from this surrounding area subsequently joined.
Edgar Mobbs was considered both a sporting and war hero and was sadly killed in 1917. Over the course of the First World War, sixteen Olney players lost their lives. Our intention is to make this day a fitting tribute to them all and a chance for the people of Olney to remember and celebrate that too.
We intend to invite members of other Olney Sports Clubs, the town council and Members of Northampton and Bedford Rugby Clubs, the East Midlands Rugby Alliance and Bucks RFU, along with members of the Mobbs Memorial Trust, the British Legion, Local historical societies and our local MP. We would envisage a day of rugby, remembrance and celebration. John Swallow
