Learn from others
Our three pictures this month were winners in our last Digital Images Competition. If we look at these pictures we can learn
how to take better pictures by their example. The rst picture is by Lisa Winson in the “Open” category. It is titled “All Aboard Hogwart Express”. The picture captures the scale of the viaduct. The picture is very well exposed as a lot of the picture is quite dark, but there is plenty of detail in the engine and the stonework. The white in the smoke is not burnt out and has plenty of detail also. The positioning of the engine is excellent with the upright of the viaduct leading the eye towards the engine.
The second picture is by George Hebblewhite and titled “Rule Brittania”. It was the winner in the “All Things British” category. This is a very striking picture completely capturing the theme. The picture is very well taken with the colours well exposed and plenty of detail in the darker buildings behind. The re ections in the river add an extra dimension and interest to the image. The rays of light lead the eye into the picture.
The third picture by Stan Farmer was the winner in the “Architectural Detail” category, titled “Flight of Stairs”. The picture has good strong lines with the repetition of three in the windows and the angles of the handrail. The angles of the handrail are well positioned in relation to the windows. The picture is almost
monochromatic, and the slight colouration in the background of the windows adds extra interest, and counterpoints the lack of colours in the foreground.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 29th June at 8.00pm in the Olney Centre. Print Competition with Judge Colin Mill. All welcome.
Olney Acts of Kindness
A challenge to celebrate the Anniversary of the charter
To celebrate the granting of St Peter and St Paul’s charter by Edward II in 1366, to hold a church fair (now known as the Cherry Fair), they
are inviting you to take part in the Olney Acts of Kindness Challenge.
Imagine if each person, or group, in this town were to spend the next year in completing acts of kindness. The gift to the town and the lives of those who live, work and study in Olney would be a remarkable blessing. The acts do not have to be huge endeavours, but rather something that will bless the recipient, enhance their wellbeing and create happiness.
Your act may be as simple as offering to
hold a door open for someone, or it might be something more demanding such as digging a friend’s garden, the potential is endless. However it should be something that is done for free without expectation of nancial reward.
As an individual or as part of a group they ask you to consider completing a minimum of 700 acts of kindness during the year, although they underline that there is no limit on the number of acts you may wish to undertake. Schools, preschools, nurseries, sports clubs, voluntary organisations, businesses, churches and individuals are all welcome to participate.
On Saturday 7th May at 1:30pm, St Peter and
St Paul church are holding a special event to celebrate the anniversary of the charter, and to mark the beginning of the year of the Olney Acts of Kindness Challenge. Please do mark this is in your diary and come and be part of the start of Olney’s year of celebration.
