Olney Cherry Fair 2016
After two successive years of wet weather, though un-dampened spirits, dry weather prevailed at the annual Cherry Fair in Olney this June, welcoming what is believed to have been a record number of visitors to this annual event. With 2016 marking the 700th anniversary of the Granting of a Charter to hold a Fayre in Olney, this year’s event was jam- packed with local produce, craft, refreshments, games, face-painting, tombola and Pimm’s stalls, ably supported by an excellent BBQ. Olney Brass Band provided the music and an entertaining array of arena events included an impressive demonstration by Olney TASK Karate Club, Zumba, a dog show and so much more!
Revd Claire Wood introduced newly appointed Mayor, Jeremy Rawlings, who opened Cherry Fair. The Cherry Fair Committee, who arrange and run the event, reported a signi cantly improved pro t on the previous wet years, all of which goes to St Peter and St Paul Parish Church to support our work in Olney and the local area communities. A huge thank you to all the helpers who make Cherry Fair possible and to the public who ocked to Cherry Fair to have a good time. Public feedback on the fair is welcomed, as well as anybody interested in getting involved next year, whether it be assistance, helping on the committee or running a stall. Market Place Gallery
Dear Editor, how sad it is for Olney to see the departure of the Market Place Gallery this month. It was a Mecca for visitors to Olney and helped create a sense that Olney is a special place and not just another run-of-the-mill shopping centre. I understand that business rates of £9,500 made it impossible for the gallery to continue. Surely local councillors should be encouraging businesses like this with reduced rates for those businesses that encourage tourists?

Emberton School
With reference to Mrs Pyes letter printed in the last edition of the Phonebox regarding Emberton School, I would like to share my experiences of the school both past and present.
We live in Emberton and three of our four children have attended the school and are currently successfully studying their GCSEs, A levels and a Degree in Medicine.
Our fourth child, who is six years old, currently attends the school and although the interior of the building has been modernised and the teaching team has changed, the ethos of the school remains the same.
The unrivalled staff to pupil ratio has allowed my daughter to progress hugely both academically and socially. Due to the intimacy of the learning environment the teaching staff have really got to know my child and she them. She arrives at school every morning with a big smile on her face ready to learn. I couldn’t ask for anymore.
Finally I would like to say ‘Well done Emberton School’ on a fantastic Sports Day! The look of determination on the children’s faces when running towards the nish line and the fun that they had was great to see.
However, I think the highlight of the event was the Head teacher and Teachers race, all of whom, like the children, were trying their hardest to be rst across the nishing line! Regards, Lindsey Humphries
