Olney Karate club
(T.A.S.K)
KBy Josh Totton
arate is a worldwide sport attracting individuals of all ages and abilities and is easily accessible because it can be performed/practiced
anywhere. The sport is a controlled structure of unarmed combat using the hands and feet to deliver and block blows with your opponent. Many children enjoy karate as the consistency of activities allows them to show their full potential through exercise and training and with the right teacher to guide them through the moves it can be very rewarding to accomplish goals, gaining a sense of achievement when they go up a belt. Karate is about self-defence and to be able to defend yourself is a great life skill building your confidence, dedication and respect towards others. Karate teaches you how to respond to a dif cult life situation in a controlled and precise way. The club teaches karate skills in many ways, for example, the use of kick bags and you are taught how to identify the correct ways to defend your self
from danger. The most effective way for me is ‘Kumite’ which translates into ‘Grappling hands’. This style of training is a one on one scenario where you do both slow and fast attacks and defences with your opponent. A typical Kumite sequence would start with an attack followed by a defensive block and then the counter-attack and so on. I nd this the most effective because it creates and teaches the skills required for a real-life dangerous scenario.
Karate teaches respect for yourself and others. It’s also a fun, sociable activity to do and builds con dence.
Olney Karate Club, based in the Olney Youth Centre, is a friendly group of people, dedicated to the martial art. New students are warmly welcomed to the club and it’s easy to become part of the action by going along to the Youth Centre at 6:45pm on Tuesdays or Thursdays or by calling: 01234 240174 for more information.
