ach year, it is estimated that 850 million trees are cut down to make paper worldwide. If the UK made all of its own paper, it would use a forest the size of Wales every single year to produce enough. In fact, if America saved all their
waste paper, they could build a 12-foot high wall across the United States with it. At Phonebox Magazine, approximately 6271kg of paper is used making each monthly issue; that is around 6.27 tonnes of paper!
So where did paper making originate from? It is believed that paper was invented in China in AD105 when a court of cial, Tsai Lun, presented Emperor Ho-Ti with a piece of paper as an alternative writing surface to silk. At this time, the paper making process primarily used rags, shing nets and grass as the raw materials. Having said this, more recent archaeological investigations place the actual invention of paper making approximately 200 years earlier than this presentation of paper to the Emperor.
It took many centuries for paper to reach Europe. In fact, in 1086, when William the Conqueror instigated the Domesday Book, paper was still unheard of in the United Kingdom. In the end, it was the Moors who introduced paper making to Europe from North Africa. Records show that paper was used in a charter of 1237, and the register of 1249 at Bouches-du-Rhone in France.
