A Trip to Oxford
Towards the end of June a group of ladies travelled on the X5 bus to Oxford for the day.
The weather was disappointingly
damp but, undeterred, the ladies made visits to the Ashmolean Museum, the Martyrs Memorial, the covered market and the Radcliffe Camera. After browsing in Boswell’s bookshop it was time to get the bus back home after an enjoyable day out.
At the beginning of July it was once again time for Strawberry Fair, and Newport Pagnell WI had their usual cake and plant stall.
The weather was warm (hot at times!) and sunny, which brought out a lot of people in the afternoon to watch the dancing displays and children’s games in the arena. The plants and cakes proved very popular and there were few items left by the end of the afternoon. Many thanks to all those who baked and came to help on the stall.
The July meeting was attended by a record number of members, no doubt attracted by a talk on National Trust Gardens.
Roger Skipper was our speaker, and he kept everyone enthralled with his beautiful photographs of several gardens, including the Winter Walk at Anglesey Abbey, the roses in full bloom at Mottisfont, and the white garden at Sissinghurst.
The raf e was won by Miranda Allum and Pat Cutts, and the competition by Marion Stapleton, Evelyn Mison and Barbara Hilton.
Newport Pagnell Women’s Institute meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the room at the rear of the Methodist Church. In August we have a return visit from Kevin Varty whose talk is entitled ‘Dancing Bust to Bust’ (memories of Joyce Grenfell, anyone?).
