OLNEY RUGBY CLUB – WHAT A SEASON FOR OUR MINIS & JUNIORS
Seems like only yesterday we welcomed everyone back for the start of the season... and what a season it has been!
Every age group has had a fantastic season – we’ve welcomed new members, made new friends, played new teams and made new club records!
Our Minis’ have enjoyed great numbers and played in some enjoyable, friendly matches against our local opposition.
The U13s have played some wonderful rugby. With matches all over the region and beyond, as they travelled to Italy for their tour – proudly wearing their club ties!
The U14s started the year as they meant to go on by winning a Festival in the first week of the season. They entered competitive rugby in the form of the East Midlands U14s Cup, coming out 22-7 victors in the final and securing the first Silverware of the season for the Club.
The U15s had two great cup matches before exiting from the competition after a defeat by ONs. However, their League campaign was simply ‘spot- on’: 5 wins from 5 games saw them top the table, bringing home the second piece of Silverware.
In their last year of M&Js, the U16s had another great season. Like the U15s they had a great start to their Cup run, but, once again it was ONs to be their undoing. Undeterred, they played their league games in true Club spirit: P5, W4, D1 being crowned League winners and bringing home Silverware number 3!
The U18 Girls teamed up with Ampthill playing a mix of friendlies and tournaments. They played their Cup rugby in the Bucks Invitational League. It was to be another unbeaten season for a Club team: P7, W7– well done girls on bringing home Silverware number 4.
Colts: What.A.Season! League Champions, Cup Winners and Oceanic Trophy Winners – that’s Silverware numbers 5, 6 and 7.
LOCAL SPORT ROUNDUP
The Club is thriving, with many new members OLNEY TENNIS CLUB joining this season. See you all on court soon!
Five Olney teams have made it through to the Quarterfinals of the TMK Knock Out Cup, including Ladies A, B, and D teams and the Mens B and C teams. Keep going warriors!
Derby Drama: A recent round of the TMK Summer League saw Olney Ladies A go up against the Olney Ladies B in a dramatic derby. It was very competitive with qualilty shots being fired - no one can doubt the Olney Tennis Club passion!
OLNEY & CLIFTON FISHING ASSOCIATION
As I write this there is one month to go until the start of the season.
Every time that I walk about the town I seem to meet one of our members and they all say the same thing; the river
looks great. Now although it looks great we can tell by the fact that some platforms are still underwater that it has not yet returned to the normal Summer levels. Personally I’m not a fan of really hot weather but we need a few weeks of heat without rain to get the levels back. Now, the fact that we have had so much rain together with the coming of summer has led to a massive growth of reeds, weeds, nettles, etc, all of which need working on virtually on a weekly basis. Despite his impression of being a one-man task force, our head of maintenance Adrian Gott will need help, so I would ask all our members who are available to help to follow our Facebook page and look out for work party dates. If I know any dates well in advance I will try and put them in this column for non-Facebook followers.
As I’m sure everyone is aware, since Covid and the lockdowns the price of everything has gone up. Not wishing to impact on people’s already stretched finances the committee has kept membership prices the same for the last few years. However, this year we have had to give in to outside forces and have raised both the adult and senior memberships by £5 each to £30 and £20 per year. The junior membership remains free. So here’s to seeing as many of you as possible on the banks on 16th June. Tight lines. Damon.
OLNEY BOWLING CLUB
The eagerly awaited first away game of 2024 was played against Ampthill on Saturday, 20th April. It resulted in a resounding victory for OBC with a score of 100 points to 35. The following away match on the 27th resulted in a close run loss for OBC of 31 points to Leighton Buzzard’s 39.
The Ladies scored a great win against Woburn Sands on 8th May with a score of OBC 59 to Woburn Sand’s 46. The Tony Allcock Trophy game was played against Stony Stratford on 10th May with sadly an away loss for OBC of 32 points to 42. The Open Day on 5th May took place on a lovely sunny day – pictured above. It was well attended and resulted in us gaining some new members. We look forward to seeing them on the green.
Join us on Mondays, 10.30am or Thursdays 11am for a friendly roll-up and a cuppa. A great way for new or old members to make new friends and keep fit. Come half an hour earlier to get organised. Fancy learning to play bowls? Contact ray.smith.rs95@gmail.com to arrange a taster session.
