2462 (Oakley) Squadron Air Cadets are looking for new members so here is your chance!
The Squadron is based in the village of Oakley, near Bedford less than ten miles from Olney. We are an active unit that benefits from having its own HQ building and some exceptional uniformed and civilian staff.
On parade nights – Monday and Thursday 1915hrs to 2130hrs – activities range from cadet projects to .22 indoor range target shooting, drill, sports, field exercises, skills training, projects, presentations and more! At weekends there is the regular opportunity for :
a Flying, either at RAF Wyton near Huntingdon (Grob Tutors) or RAF Henlow (Grob Vigilants powered gliders).
a Outdoor target shooting using the L98 (.566mm calibre) cadet service rifle.
a Rock climbing and adventure training at outdoor centres in Wales and the Lake District.
a Camping weekends at various military training grounds.
a Many sports such as
swimming, football, netball, hockey, athletics, and cross country, at wing, regional and national level.
There are many
badges and awards
to be won. The Air
Cadet Organisation
is also a leading
participant in the
Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme.
Those judged good enough to lead can expect promotion – to Corporal then Sergeant, on to Flight Sergeant then to Warrant Officer. When you become16 you are likely to be offered the opportunity to undertake flying training to solo standard or do a parachuting course. Last year Cadet Georgina Humberstone had the opportunity to do both! Earlier this year Cadet Flight Sgt Rycraft successfully completed a flying scholarship at Dundee and recently Cadet Sergeant Mackenzie was trained as a glider pilot by 616 VGS at RAF Henlow in Bedfordshire.
This year’s one week summer camp was at RAF Lossiemouth in North-East Scotland, the largest and busiest fast jet base in the Royal Air Force and home to three operational Tornado Fighter Squadrons.
