Ousathon
the bathing steps in Olney.
From there he swam to Lavendon Mill in the most horrendous thunder storm. From Lavendon Mill he ran three kilometres to Newton Blossomville where he was met with his bike. The 50km course was completed by a 35 kilometre cycle to Ravenstone where he was greeted by a reception at Abbey House.
The venue was generously provided by his friends Michael and Sheila Knox and the refreshments by Marcus Jordan & Co, the Olney based Property Management Company. He was due there at 6pm but, in typical fashion, he arrived at two minutes to six, barely out of breath.
At 2pm on the 18th August, Nick Butler of East Street in Olney undertook an extraordinary endeavour. He set off in a canoe from Tyringham Bridge and, escorted by a phalanx of swans, rowed to
The question you may be asking is why on earth anybody would wish to carry out such a daunting task! The answer is that Nick is not just anybody. Having been a successful businessman in the area, he decided that he wanted to give something back to the world.
He therefore offered the benefit of
both his physical and intellectual skills
to a group known as Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), a charitable organisation which places people in developing country communities.
They were enlightened enough to accept and, in return, offer him a two year posting to Cambodia, a country which is beginning
to emerge from a dreadful period in its history.
Nick has been placed in an eco-tourist project on the shores of the Tonle Sap Lake near the temples of Ankhor in the middle of Cambodia. The receipts from visitors who come to see the flora and fauna of the lake
are used to create jobs and provide healthcare and education for the Prek Toul village community. The project will also manage the flora and fauna in a sustainable way in order to ensure the future livelihood of the village.
Marcus Jordan & Co, the Olney based Property Management Company were delighted to sponsor Nick’s Ousathon and are happy to forward any additional contributions directly to VSO on Nick’s behalf or you can donate on line www.justgiving.com/nickbutler
To date the event has raised £1700. d
