Gilpin Tennis Club win double
The 2006 tennis season ended on Sunday 3rd September with the MK Knockout finals. Once again both the men and ladies from Gilpin were in action.
The men were first on court and managed a 5-3 victory over hosts Stony Stratford A, while the ladies convincingly defeated their opponents 7-1. This was after yet another successful season for Gilpin in the Milton Keynes tennis leagues. The men were triumphant in Division 1, beating all opposition and retaining their champions title for the 11th successive year.
The ladies also won Division 1 and regained their title that they narrowly lost last year.
The mens team, captained by Andrew Soul, included John Swallow, Dave Rawlinson, Tony Wolfe, Chris Soul, Norman Church and Terry Mabbitt. The ladies team, captained by Sue Soul included, Liz Murdoch, Kathy Danskin, Jenny Prior, Val Howes, Angela Redgewell and Monica Becerra.
Andrew and Liz continue to represent Bucks and have had mixed fortunes this year with their respective teams. However, they hope to retain their mixed doubles title once again. Andrew is also defending his mens doubles and singles titles in the Bucks Knockout competition this year.
Other successes this year for Gilpin players have included representation in the vets GB team with a victory over Norway in August. Both Dave and Andrew, members of Vets GB were part of an eight pair squad to visit Norway and helped to secure an historic first away victory over a very strong Norwegian team.
The winter season starts in October and the mixed team will be defending their Division 1 title in the Milton Keynes league and the ladies will be hoping to repeat last year’s success in the Bucks league when they won Division 1 for the first time. d
