The Wollaston Carnival Committee continue to meet throughout the year and as this year's event is nearly here activity has been stepped up to try to make things go as well as last year.
This year we have booked a new marching band, the Melton Mowbray Toy Soldiers. Last year’s band, the 13th Coventry Scout Band, were already booked up (eight months in advance, such was their popularity) and our regular band, the Wellingborough Redwell, are still having a sabbatical. The Toy Soldiers have appeared at various events and competitions up and down the country, whilst winning a string of awards, so we look forward, I am sure, to a good show.
The Storm Cheerleading Team will be appearing again after its successful debut at last year’s Carnival, with an even bigger and better show. Cha-Cha the Clown is unfortunately on holiday, but we have booked Graham Sargeant a magical entertainer to keep our younger customers happy. We will also have the usual fairground attractions, a dog show and displays, children's races and hopefully many stalls from various village organisations. We are all keeping our fingers crossed and hoping for a warm and sunny day again.
This year's carnival will take place on Saturday 16th June, with the parade leaving from Wollaston Secondary School at 1.30pm and progressing down Irchester Road, along South Street, Howard Road, Hinwick Road, down London Road and into the Playing Fields. The Carnival will be officially opened at 2.15 pm by Arnold Peters (who plays Jack Woolley in the Archers), to start the afternoon’s events. A special plea to anyone who usually parks a vehicle on the parade route. If you could please leave the route clear between the above hours we would be most grateful, as hold-ups have occurred in previous years with the larger lorries getting stuck.
We would hopefully like to see as many villagers take part in the parade/carnival as possible, last year the response from you all was magnificent and aided by good weather we all had a wonderful village event. If you could enter a float or walk in the parade, man (or woman) a stall, buy a draw ticket or just turn up on the day we would be only too pleased to see you. Remember its your carnival, with many village organisations benefiting, so let’s make it as memorable as last year, if not better.
Would all potential stall holders, please make sure that you book your stall in
advance with our Secretary and occupy your pitch at the Playing Fields by 12.00 noon to avoid disappointment. Last year we did not have too many problems with parking, but please remember that there is only a limited amount of space and walking may be an easier option?
There will be a dog show going on in the small arena and members of the public are invited to bring their pets down to enter for various fun categories – although please bring only well behaved dogs.
The Quiz League is still on going, with the third of the four legs completed at the end of April. Many thanks to all who either bought or sold sheets for this leg. I received a total of no less than 15 all correct sheets and have decided that I must be making them far too easy. After a draw the £5 prizes go to the following: Lynda Capps, Pat Shepherd, Wendy Barber and Joan Shivers.
In the overall race for this year's title, everything is very tight, with no less than nine people who have yet to drop a point and a host of people just behind waiting to pounce on any slip up by the leaders. In the event of a tie for overall champion, a 'nearest to' question will be asked to decide the final positions. Quiz sheets for the final leg have been available since early May and will need to be in by mid-June so that the overall trophy and prizes can be presented at the Carnival on the 16th. Regular subscribers should have already received their sheets.
The quiz nights at the Works in London Road still seem to be going well with a few regular teams turning up. Thanks to everyone who has turned up to support the Carnival Committee at these events and to Neil, Julie and the Committee at the Works for hosting us. Thanks to your generosity over £250 has been raised towards this year’s event. There are two more quiz nights booked in the coming months 7th June and 5th July, both are on a Thursday and start at approx. 8.30pm.
We will be holding a Grand Draw as usual this year with many prizes, so please don’t forget to buy your tickets.
If your organisation would like to benefit from this year's Carnival, then please write by the 7th July 2007 to the Secretary, 34 Duck End, Wollaston, NN29 7SH, at the latest. We will then consider all applications and make awards as appropriate. K
