Plant of the Month Weigela ‘Bristol Ruby’
Some shrubs you will see in many gardens. In some people’s eyes this makes them common, but the reason is because they need little attention, do not suffer from many pests and diseases and usually have a good display of flowers.
This garden hybrid has clusters of lovely, ruby-red tubular flowers that come from very dark-red flower buds in late spring and early summer. This deciduous shrub is vigorous and has en erect habit and can reach 1.8m if left to its own devices but can be pruned lower if required. After flowering, cut back flowered shoots to strong buds if needed.
VIE-GEE-la or WY-GEE-la is the correct pronunciation for this shrub, but is commonly referred to as wy-gee-LEE-ah for some reason, maybe a TV presenter got it all wrong back in the sixties and it stuck! By the way, the strange name is taken from Christian Ehrenfried Weigel 1748-1831, a German professor of botany. K
