Olney Town Council
News from your Olney Town Council
With the Milton Keynes Council Mayor making ceremony separated from the Annual Council meeting, for the first time this year invitations were sent to representatives from the surrounding Parishes. Olney’s Town Mayor, Councillor John Smail, attended the ceremony as Olney’s representative and is seen here being welcomed by Councillor Mike Barry. Olney’s Deputy Mayor, John Sharp, was also in attendance.
Lifepath Olney
Olney Town Mayor, Councillor John Smail, attended the first of this two day event held in conjunction with St Peter and St Paul’s Church, the Sutcliff Baptist Church and the Trustees of the Cowper & Newton Museum and organised by Simon Barker. The aim of Lifepath was to invite Year 5 school pupils from the surrounding area to come to Olney as part of an RE trip where they would learn about the life path of John Newton and explore the Christian faith which transformed him. Both days attracted over 200 pupils and with such good weather many of the events were able to take place outside. Councillor Paul Watson attended on the second day and both he and John Smail agreed with the Reverend Philip Davies and Simon Barker that the event had been a resounding success.
As reported by Councillor Steve Clark last November, Olney Town Council took the proactive step to try to resolve the drink related anti-social behaviour experienced during the summer months of 2006 and worked closely with partners from Milton Keynes Council and Thames Valley Police. This led to the agreement, after consultation with the residents of Olney, to establish a Drinking Control Area throughout the Parish of Olney. This is now in place and under Section 12 of the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 a Police Officer may require a person not to consume intoxicating liquor and to surrender opened or unopened containers of liquor. Residents will see a number of signs around Olney advising residents and visitors that Olney is a Drinking Control Area. Olney’s Town Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Councillors John Smail and John Sharp, are pictured in front of one of the signs positioned on Johnson’s Field.
