The cruel price of rice
The runaway increase in world food prices is already causing anxiety and hardship for our partners in Sierra Leone. In 2007 the cost of rice, the staple diet, rose by 40%. The World Food Programme is already concerned about smallholder farmers, who last year produced less than 50% of the rice they needed. And this in a country where 52% of people live on less than US$1 per day.
