Olney Runners Excel in Round One of the Irchester Multi-Terrain Series 2010!
On Sunday 17th January, a bunch of hardy Olney Runners travelled over to Irchester Country Park to race in the first of three multi-terrain races. In all, 35 Olney Runners, encompassing a range of abilities, entered a combination of 5, 10 and 15k races, each with their own personal goal. Some were there to win their race; to win their category; to beat last year’s time; to participate in their first ever race or simply to just get round and soak up the atmosphere!
However, a lot was expected of us, we had raised our head above the parapet last year, as the team raced exceptionally well and was subsequently crowned Club Champions for the 2009 Series...a level of expectation had been set; not that any of us is in the slightest bit competitive!
The weather was perfect and the conditions underfoot weren’t too treacherous; no ice or snow and not even too much mud to speak of (people have been known to lose shoes in the past!) Mind you, it was only the first race...the mud generally deepens as the series progresses.
Without exception, every one raced brilliantly and as a consequence of which, there were many superb personal performances,
culminating in a number of firsts notably Phil Holland for the Men’s 15k and Juliette Minter for the Ladies 15k, alongside second and third places in the 3 distances and among different categories. Impressive given the 352 entrants overall!
Among these excellent results many Olney Runners recorded personal bests, a very clear indication that a combination of excellent coaching and individual effort really does pay off. The Irchester Series is as much about the team effort as it is the individual one, every runner’s contribution is invaluable. As a consequence of Sunday’s efforts we certainly made our presence felt and not just with the running effort, as we had supporters in abundance...including dogs and children!
So, now we return to training in order to prepare ourselves for the next two races: Sunday 7th & 28th February, as we endeavour to retain our title...watch this space...or come and join us and give it a go...the feeling when you finish is fantastic!
