100 years’
celebration in
Newton Blossomville
Villagers in Newton Blossomville have something to celebrate! The village hall, called the Reading Room, has been used by the community for 100 years and thanks to a lottery grant it has recently been refurbished. A party will be held for the village people to mark the occasion.
A hundred years ago in 1909, Dennis Herbert Farrer donated land for a Reading Room in Newton Blossomville and a ‘considerable’ amount of money had been collected by Arthur Percy Haviland for the establishment and maintenance of a Reading Room for the use of the labouring class; men of 15 years and over resident in Newton Blossomville.
The premises were also to be let out for village functions when wives, children and friends could attend.
According to the original trust deeds, work started in January 1910. In 1948 a kitchen and toilets were added. In 1953 the school started to use the Reading Room as additional accommodation to their own building which is across the playground. In 1991 a large extension to the hall was built which also provided additional storage, a modern kitchen and a disabled toilet. In 2009 the committee applied for a National Lottery Grant ‘Awards for All’ and was awarded £6,200 to ‘improve the Hall to provide better facilities for all members of the community’.
Work has recently been completed and a small party has been organised for villagers to celebrate the building’s 100 years of community service. There will be a raffle to raise funds to help pay the committee’s contribution to the grant and to fund further projects which will hopefully help to keep the building going for another 100 years.
