soapbox guys and I thought you can never have enough carnival photos so why not see if it’s you in the photo?
Well enjoy August, hopefully it’ll be a little less wet. Also don’t forget you can promote your band or event here in the buzz. mark@phoneboxmag.co.uk

Newport Pagnell Soapbox Derby 2011
The 2011 Newport Pagnell Soapbox Derby proved to be a great success. This year the sun was shining and the crowds enthusiastic. The Phonebox was there to take photos and afterwards I caught up with co event organiser Mr Nick Walduck. What’s more the guys managed to raise £337.60 for Willen Hospice. Thanks to all the guys who helped out with the collection buckets!
So following up to last years Soapbox Derby I see that the turn out was even better, the message is definitely spreading. From talking to people do you expect more entrants and an even bigger crowd next year?
“This year again was fantastic, the crowd turn out was better than expected, it really amazed us and once again the number of entrants was superb too. We are proud that the people of Newport Pagnell take the time out to support our event, it’s much appreciated. They say things can only get bigger and better so here’s to The Soapbox Derby 2012.”
It was a glorious start to the day, would there have been a different set of rules had it been raining?
“Regarding the weather the rules would have really been the same as the weather is beyond our control so at least the good old british summer was kind to us, unlike the day before when the carnival procession got rained on very hard. I guess we could have asked for all soapboxes to fit a set of full wet tyres, whats good enough for Lewis Hamilton is good enough for our soapbox racers.”
There were some great entrants this year, the effort put in was phenomenal. If you had to be bias then which soapbox would you say was your favourite?
“The past two years entrants have been phenomenal. It’s such a great effort to try and build something interesting and we have had some interesting soapboxes from Roy Pinks Aston Martin to a mouse driving a block of cheese, but as for a favourite mmmmmm..... I guess as I love VW Campers it may have to be Paul Traffords entry driven by his two sons, but overall every soapbox is unique in its own way.”
I was blown away by the enthusiasm and willingness of both the crowd and
the community to make this event the success it proved to be. I'm sure that you'll be looking for more volunteers for next year. How can people help out?
“The enthusiasm was fantastic once again, as I said earlier its nice to get the community behind us. As it’s only our second year doing this it was a big risk. It could have had no interest and been a flop but we think we did a good job again this year. Any volunteer on the day is welcome to help marshall with crowd control and setting up to first aiders, we will even supply the hi vis vest but we will worry about that nearer the time. This year we were kindly sponsored by Newport Pagnell Food Boxes. So many thanks to Neil Whitford who also took part again in this years racing and many thanks to his wife who always helps out on the day.”
Do you have any more ideas / plans in place yet for next year? What would you like to see for next years Soapbox?
“Next years plan is just to keep on building on our success and keep making it bigger and better and keep the community spirit alive in Newport Pagnell. Plans will be made for next time early next year as me and Gary’s next task is to put up Newport Pagnell’s Christmas lights.” (Look out for the feature in the run up to Christmas, MS)
Lastly, thanks and special mentions.
“Thank you’s? Mmmmmm, ok. Myself, Nick, my bro Gary, Gary’s girlfriend Claire Blake, Barry Thornton all volunteers sponsors, Willen Hospice collection volunteers, entrants and the public for watching. See you all in 2012”
Thanks Nick, I look forward to catching up with you for the Christmas lights and then next years 2012 Newport Pagnell Soapbox Derby!
