Newton Blossomville School’s
New Field
The concept for the eld came about due to the fact that the village’s outstanding school didn’t have a grassy area for the children to play on, just the concrete playground.
In discussion with Governors, who have real expertise in this area, a local land owner offered part of his land to the school for the children to play on. Planning drawings and an application was submitted to the local authority by David Swanston, Chair of Governors, and a grant from Carlton Educational Trust was applied for to help fund the eld project.
The children wrote letters to the planning department telling the of cers what they would do on the eld if they could have permission. These letters were shared at the planning meeting with the of cers, who voted overwhelmingly in favour of the eld.
The fun then began! Diggers arrived, and the children took great delight in watching the diggers moving the soil and attening the ground. The staff kept them going with cups of tea on
the cold wintery days!
The seeding and fencing soon took place, and the field began to take shape. The children and staff regularly observed the eld’s changing landscape, and soon it was ready to be used.
We arranged for Premier Sport, our PE provider to come in and run a fun sports session on 2nd May. We invited Governors, village residents, the local councillor, parents past, present and new and Mr Hartigan, the landowner, to come along to the grand opening!
The field was officially opened in glorious sunshine by Mr Swanston, Chair of Governors who was instrumental in making this happen for the children of Newton Blossomville School.
The eld will make such a difference to us. Not only is it somewhere for the children to run and play; the staff are already devising ways to incorporate the outside space into the curriculum. It is a legacy for the future generations of the school.
