‘Baptist Church is
Growww
iiiiiiiing!’
Because the work and congregation of the Baptist church in Olney is going from strength to strength, there are some major developments planned for the church building.... Our church has been meeting on the Market Place since the late 17th century and undergone many developments over the centuries. Now the time has come to upgrade the rear and side of the church to bene t those who visit the premises throughout the week as well as the regular church attendees.
The plans include: a Large entrance hall and foyer, improved meeting rooms, upgraded kitchen and toilets, a larger crèche and safe children’s play-area. Why not pop in some time and have a look around – you’ll nd a warm welcome here!

Pilgrim to the Holy Land
The Rev Thelma Shacklady, well known to Phonebox readers, who delight in her inimitable monthly book reviews, brought the world of Jesus back to life for a large group of St Peter and St Paul parishioners when she spoke recently of her pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
The Rev Shacklady had been on the Oxford Diocesan Pilgrimage led by the Bishop of Oxford, the Right Reverend John Pritchard.
She told of her visit to Cana where Jesus performed the rst of his miracles, and described how awesome and inspiring it was to have communion on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus had called Andrew and Peter to follow him, had preached from a boat and had had breakfast with his disciples after his resurrection.
“The day we spent in Galilee was
memorable. The setting was superb, sitting on felled tree trunks, facing the calm lake sparkling in the sunshine. There was something numinous about the setting – Jesus coming close. It was a special moment, a ‘thin place’ between heaven and earth. And the knowledge that Jesus the man had walked there, maybe stood on that very spot.”
The object of the talk was not only to acquaint fellow churchgoers of her experiences as a pilgrim, but also to raise money for St Peter and St Paul’s Soul Time project. The church is reordering its hall to accommodate a Memory Club for the elderly and an after-school meeting place for the young. She was roundly applauded after her talk, at which wine and refreshments were served, and at which £269 was raised for the Soul Time projects.
