The Churches of Olney - your invitation
The Christian Churches of Olney celebrate their common faith, and express their worship with refreshing diversity, from contemporary to traditional approaches, and thought provoking Bible teaching. Come along - we’d love to get to know you. More information is available from each Church, their leaders and websites.
FOR CHRIST!
The Rt Rev John West, retired Bishop of Gloucester, confirmed 15 new members of the Church of England before a packed congregation in the church of St Peter and St Paul, Olney.
The ceremony, which was held under the auspices of the Newport Deanery, began with a celebration afternoon tea and moved into the formal service at 6 p.m. Twelve of the candidates,
Robert Adams, Stephen Armitage, Rebekah Ball, Nicolas Blackmore, Linda Clifton, Samuel Eglinton, Ronald Fletcher, Matthew Gale, Jonathan Heron, George Smith, Peter Viney and Sophie Wood, daughter of the Rector of Olney, the Rev Claire Wood, were from St Peter and St Paul, and three, Robert Adams, Iain James and Louise James, were from St Michael’s Church, Lavendon.
At the high point of the service, the Bishop laid his hands on each candidate and prayed that the Holy Spirit would empower them as they continued their lives as followers of Christ. The Bishop based his talk to the congregation on the parable that Jesus told comparing himself to a farmer sowing seed some of which landed on terrain that was poor, dry, rocky or where it was sti ed by weeds, but where some fell on good earth where it prospered and produced a hundredfold harvest.
Open Doors
Opening Doors in difficult places
On Sunday 7th July at 10.30am, the Olney Baptist Church will be welcoming a speaker from the organisation ‘Open Doors’. Initially it started in 1955 with Brother Andrew (‘God’s Smuggler’) taking Bibles into Communist controlled Eastern Europe, for the underground church there. These days the world has changed, but the need for help has not – Open Doors still supports and encourages Christians and churches in hostile places.
In over 50 countries, Open Doors is supplying Bibles, training church leaders, delivering Scripture-based literacy programmes and supporting Christians who suffer for their faith. In some countries even today persecution means that families lose their breadwinner to
imprisonment or death; violence forces them to flee or lose their livelihoods; discrimination makes employment difficult. Open Doors brings practical support to families, to widows, to orphans, to the victims of violence or natural disaster. It also provides advocacy at local and government levels, and raises awareness of issues facing the church worldwide, and encouraging prayer and generosity.
