Scouts Community Week 3rd-9th June 2013
Last week thousands of Scouts throughout the UK made a positive impact in local communities with Community Week Projects.
The purpose of Community Week was to spread the word about Scouting, to bond with the local community and raise essential funds for local and national Scouting alike. Coinciding with Volunteers’ Week, this was the perfect opportunity for volunteers to showcase the wonderful contribution they make throughout the year. Without their planning, hard work and dedication, Scout Community Week would not be possible.
It’s also the opportunity to promote and champion all the inspiring things Scouts do during the other 51 weeks of the year.
As part of this Joint Community Week the 1st Olney Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and Yong Leaders took part in conservation work at Barn eld. Helped by supporting leaders and parents all armed with gardening gloves, stout shoes, cutting and lopping tools they helped clear and prune the area (under the watchful eye of Martin Ward Olney Head Groundsman) and collected ash saplings that were taken to family camp for whittling and pioneering.
Barn eld is a beautiful natural habitat within Olney featuring varied wildlife such as kestrels, jackdaws, yellow hammer, voles and mice. It is a tting place for the Millenium Beacon.
Martin Ward was on hand to help and commented ‘Spending much of my time tending the Olney environment it’s great to see young people getting involved and helping out.’
