What have the Lions been up to this month? We have had a fairly active month with a number of events taking place both locally and further afield. -- Lions Day at the United Nations - Politicians and representatives of Lions Clubs throughout Great Britain come together each year to celebrate an historic partnership between Lions and the United Nations. Beginning after the end of World War II when World Leaders joined together to sign the UN Charter , the founder of Lions, Melvin Jones and two Past International Presidents were asked to help develop the non-governmental (NGO) Charter for the UN. Since then , the two organisations have co-operated on many humanitarian ventures, with Lions providing aid and manpower for UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund), WHO (the World Health Organisation) and UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) projects. From the beginning of the relationship the two organisations have respected the objectives of Lions Clubs International limiting our activities to humanitarian endeavours with no involvement in the political or security affairs of the UN. Since 1978, Lions Clubs International has been privileged to have a Lions Day with the United Nations at the UN HQ in New York and are the only International Service Organisation to be afforded this privilege. The UK Multiple District has a Lions Day with the United Nations each March and this is held in the Houses of Parliament in London. At this meeting, members of local clubs meet Parliamentary and UN representatives to find out, first hand, how our activities are supporting the many UN projects worldwide . This gives us a real appreciation of the benefits which Lions bring to those less fortunate than ourselves wherever they may live. ----- Malt at the Movies ----- A fairly active month which saw us running "Malt at the Movies", our attempt at combining an award winning general release film with a whisky tasting. It was, we believe , a world first. Did it work? The feedback suggests it did but this was thanks to intricate planning and support from a number of people enabling us to manage the logistics without too many problems . The congratulations received at the end by many of the audience as they left, suggested we really did have a roaring success. The event saw our charity account benefitting from an injection of over £800 and made the effort all worthwhile but it does make it difficult to work out where we go from here. This was our fourth tasting event, but how do we better this? Ideas please via our website www.olneylionsclub.org . --- Defibrillator at Brooklands The club recently funded the provision of a defibrillator at the Brooklands Centre in Newport Pagnell. Whilst the equipment is vital, so too is the maintenance of this and the ongoing training needed to ensure that it is effective when it is called upon. Our 'package of support' covers a seven year period and sees the club investing over £1300 in this project.
