timing equipment. With the honour of Olney at stake with their annual battle with Liberal in Kansas , things had to be accurate . If I remember correctly, it is 417 yards start to finish . Devon Byrne , the winner, took less than a minute to do it! 55.6 seconds to be precise . The Mayoral Limo (our Hyundai) would struggle to do that. Having now won three races in a row, Devon will have to retire in accordance to the rules . A Shriving service then took place in the Parish Church , during which the prizes were presented to the worthy winners. A late afternoon meal was most welcome , to finish off a good day. I heard later on that evening that Olney had indeed beaten Liberal with the faster time . Timeforabitofamoanandupsetafew people! I am one of the band of volunteer gardeners who plant and maintain the gardens that start ne x t to the Royal British Legion and go along the river, past Brooklands , into the churchyard and around as far as Riverside and the footbridge across into Castle Meadow. There are very few of us and we can be found every Tuesday and Thursday morning (weather permitting) working hard to make a part of our town a pleasant place to be. Many mums bring their children to play on the swings and paddle
in the river. Shop and office workers spend lunch-time there . Many people bring their dogs with them . And here comes the moan . So many of the dog owners let their dogs off to run around. The owner is suddenly oblivious to what their dog is doing. From our experience, they are digging up freshly planted flowers and leaving piles of mess around . This is just what dogs do. They don 't know any better , but the owners do! Imagine for a moment that your small child is happily running on the grass and then trips up. As they do. Chances are , they will have landed in a pile of dog mess. Unpleasant and unhealthy . I know that most owners are very careful and keep their dog on a lead and clear up after it. It is just the few, who even when told about their dog, just carry on without a care in the world. Well, it is my world too! So keep your dog on a lead!
As the weather improves , I am keen to get away in our cara van . Yvonne has been very busy cleaning the upholstery and making new curtains for it and I have been fitting an outside mains power socket and installing LED lights under the wall cupboards and also upgrading the shower . All will be finished in good time for us to go to the RHS Spring Show in Malvern. I
will just have to be patient and concentrate on doing my bit for the town . Which sort of brings me to something for us all to think about. The Council, through its Press and Public Relations committee , is looking for another large annual event to be held in the town , along the size of the Carnival , which reflects the towns heritage, of either the Cromwell Garrison connection , or more recently, motoring, which is Aston Martin and before them , Salmons Coachworks. Big and bold that grabs the attention . Something we can publicise far and wide to bring some welcome visitors to Newport. Any ideas? Let us know. All ideas will get full consideration . I think that is all for now, my cup of ideas has run dry and I need to lay down in a darkened room to recover. Whoever said that retirement is easy needs their head examined!
