If you 've ever wondered just what a Deputy Lieutenant does, this was your chance to find out. Our guest speaker, Mr. Collis, told us that the Lord Lieutenant of a county is the Queen's personal representative , and most of them have several Deputies, depending upon the size of the area they are responsible for.
The office of Lord Lieutenant was established in 1547 in the reign of Edward VI, and would usually have been filled by a wealthy landowner whose main task would be to raise armies for the King. In 1586 the first Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire was appointed , and the first Deputy at the same time . Nowadays there are about 30 Deputy Lieutenants in Buckinghamshire .
Whereas a Lord Lieutenant has a uniform, a Deputy does not - but he has a Badge of Office which is worn on all official occasions so that he can be easily recognised .
Mr. Collis took up his position of Deputy Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire in 2001, and was involved in the
local Working Party helping to arrange celebrations for the Queen 's Golden Jubilee , and has met both the Queen and Prince Phillip.
Sometimes he is called upon to present awards to people who are unable to attend Buckingham Palace, and has been involved in making nominations for attendees to the Royal Garden Parties. He also helps with fund raising events for local groups.
It sounded a most interesting and busy occupation , and one which we all enjoyed hearing about.
The raffle winners this month were Julie Allen and Iris Kennewell.
The competition was won by Angela Hancox, 2nd Barbara Hilton, 3rd Marion Stapleton.
Newport Pagnell Women's Institute meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Royal British Legion Club, and is always delighted to welcome new members . April's subject will be Fabrics , Fashion and Furniture . For further information please call Evelyn Mison on
