A little more than the Angel's Share
t started with a Christmas gift. John Ferris, IScotsman and whisky lover, was given the DVD 'The Angel 's Share' by his daughter. Whilst watching the film he had an idea. And an inspired idea at that. The film follows the whisky tasting adventures of a group of friends as they concoct a life-changing plan. John's idea was to run a whisky tasting alongside a viewing of the film . The audience get to taste the same scotch just at the relevant moment. They said it couldn't be done.
But John Ferris is not a man to miss a fund-raising opportunity , particularly one that involves whisky .
And so on March 14th, Malt at the Movies was born. A big screen was set up at the Carlton Club, popcorn placed on every table, and with public viewing licence duly obtained, the excited audience took its seat. The lights were dimmed , the film fired up and the first taster, a Johnnie Walker Black Label, rolled out. It was the start of a very good evening .
The film, directed by Ken Loach, centres around a group of Scottish friends lost in a downward spiral of unemployment , crime , and violence. Narrowly escaping a prison conviction, new dad Robbie is taken under the wing of the lovely Harry, community services manager. Harry introduces Robbie to the hard stuff and quickly discovers he has a real talent. With some clever scheming and a tad of luck, the group manage to pull off a whisky
inspired scam, resulting in happy ending for them
all (quite unusual for a Ken Loach film) . ,,

The Lions team deftly dealt out the whiskies in the right order at the right time. Whisky tasting notes flashed up on support screens at the side, so we knew what we were tasting and when. It was slickly done. The film is great - a gritty, funny, feel good film. There 's an auction at the end of the film , so fittingly, there was an auction this night too. It proved to be a great fund-raiser, possibly fuelled by the amount of whisky consumed throughout the film. Seven, I believe, slightly more, it has to be said, than the Angel's Share!
Charles Maclean, a star of the film, where he plays the leader of the tasting session and Master of the Quaich, is probably the most respected Whisky writer in the industry and one of the foremost Scotch Whisky experts . He donated a signed copy of one of his many books and a personalised copy of the DVD, all of which helped raise a staggering £620!
The tasting-viewing combination is believed to be a world first , and according to John it was watched closely by Charles and other industry experts. So John's bright idea, which he and his Lions colleagues expertly brought to fruition, could end up being the start of something big. Watch this space. HB
